Late in 2009 Creative announced its latest invention, the Zii Sound D5 iPod dock. Many saw the Zii Sound D5 up close during the CES in Las Vegas, this month we got to review it!
The Creative Zii Sound D5 is being billed as a high-performance, wireless Bluetooth speaker system that enables remote mobile devices to play premium, high-quality sound. Owners can stream their favourite Internet music stations, podcasts or iTunes through these high-performance speakers that broadcast crystal-clear sound, and thanks to Bluetooth technology, all of this can be done remotely.
With an estimated 1 billion Bluetooth enabled devices produced annually, it was about time that the subject of streaming music was tackled, and it’s not something Creative took lightly. The Bluetooth technology incorporated into the Zii Sound D5 permits “seamless streaming of music” with these high-quality speakers and because there’s no need to physically dock a media device, the Zii Sound can be operated wirelessly.
An intuitive touch-sensitive volume control panel is located on the top of the Zii Sound D5 unit, whilst at the rear, a dock for recharging Apple iPods and iPhones is located. With an integrated bass port in the rear of the unit, customers can enjoy robust low frequencies.
Owners of the Creative Zii Sound D5 can enjoy “Pure Audio” from these well-designed cutting-edge speakers. The Creative Zii Sound D5 is the flagship for the product line, implementing superior design. The design layout mirrors high-end audio systems, its Flowport is constructed to minimise sound turbulence, and the full-frame monocoque design establishes maximum strength with reinforced pillars. The Creative Image Focussing Plate widens sound dispersion, providing a “gentle flare” with a clean tonal timbre.
Dimensions are 11.7 x 4.3 x 3.5 inches (42.5 x 11 x 9 centimetres), with a weight of 5.11 pounds (2.3 kilograms) for these speakers. The Zii Sound D5 has 2.75″ full-range drivers having efficient digital amplifiers with MOSFET output.
Customers can link their favourite mobile device (with inferior speakers) to these superior, cutting-edge speakers to share music with friends and family. It’s easy to connect to your favourite mobile device using a USB or iPod Bluetooth transmitter, some of which are available separately. It doesn’t always have to be wireless and Bluetooth though! A wired connection is also available with the Zii Sound D5, and the AUX-in jack can be used for connecting any other media devices.
The inbuilt speakers boast 15 Watts of power, and the Bluetooth technology can work at a distance of up to ten metres away. If a call comes on your iphone while you are using the Creative Zii Sound D5, the speakers will replicate the ringtone and pause the music while you take the call.
Creative Technology has garnered the prestigious “Red Dot” award for design for these speakers and there’s no surprise. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has approved various standards used by the Zii Sound D5 speakers, including the “APT-X” codec to provide a real-time digital/audio reduction system compressing linear audio samples by a ratio of 4:1, without sound degradation and Adaptive Frequency Hopping (AFH).
Creative Technology really is Shaping the Art of Sound! Don’t be surprised to see many more reviews declaring the Zii Sound D5 as one of the top 5 iPod docks. Due to its recharging capacity, versatility, compatibility and quality of output it’s a real contented to more well known B&W Zeppelin!

I’ve had the Creative Zii Sound D5 iPod dock for the past 4 weeks and have to say that I am still bowled over at the quality of sound this little box produces.
There is no doubt that Bluetooth streaming has moved on in leaps and bounds as this proves. The streaming is completely uninterupted and the quality of the sound is simply stunning.
Anyone buying this will NOT be disappointed!
